New Roof

The library is currently in need of a roof replacement. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the library had obtained multiple quotes and had originally planned to initiate the roofing project in 2020. Unfortunately, amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, the cost of roofing materials experienced an unprecedented quadruple increase, rendering the project financially impractical at that time. In light of these circumstances, the library has made the decision to defer the roofing project, anticipating a potential reduction in building material prices and aiming to accumulate additional funds for the endeavor. The Library has been setting funds aside for the project and making necessary patches to the roof until the project can take place.

Auditorium Technology Update

The Auditorium Technology upgrades, including curtains, rigging, and safety updates, have been expedited from their initially scheduled date in 2030 to 2026 during the 2023/2024 budget process. This decision stemmed from the emergence of issues with the audio-visual (AV) equipment connections and connectors, which began experiencing failures. These technical challenges have caused significant disruptions for organizations utilizing the Library’s facilities. By advancing the timeline, the Library hopes to address these concerns and ensure the seamless functionality of the auditorium technology for the benefit of its user organizations. However, the decision to reschedule the project to 2026 instead of 2025 was made because the redesign and needs assessments still require more time, as they are in their early stages.

Mobile Meeting Spaces

The Grace A. Dow Memorial Library is in need of mobile meeting spaces for patrons to use for tutoring, studying, and remote working. Currently, the Library has limited semi-private, quiet spaces for community members to meet, and these mobile meeting spaces will provide a flexible solution without requiring permanent structural changes. By opting for portable, mobile spaces instead of constructing new ones, the Library can create designated quiet areas that can be easily adjusted to meet changing needs. These spaces come in various sizes, allowing for versatility, and the Library plans to evaluate their effectiveness and usage before making additional purchases. Funding for this project will be provided by the Mideastern Michigan Library Cooperative.

Office Furniture for Admin Area

The Library is in need of new cubicle furniture for the staff area. The current furniture, purchased in the early 1990s, is outdated, and replacement parts are no longer available to repair broken cubicle walls or create new office spaces. As a result, the office configuration is uneven, with some staff offices small and cramped while others have more space. Without replacement panels, it is difficult to reconfigure the existing setup to make office spaces more equitable. New cubicle furniture is necessary to address these issues, provide staff with more balanced office space, and create a more professional and functional work environment.

Exterior Window Glazing

The Library is planning to replace all of its exterior glazed windows, except those replaced during the 2020 flood, in 2031. Given the significant cost associated with this project, the Library will begin saving funds in 2028 to prepare for the expense. The Library features many large windows that allow natural light to flood the space, enhancing the overall atmosphere and making it an inviting place for community members. However, some of these windows already have broken seals, which can obstruct views when humidity or moisture is present. By the time funds are accumulated and the project is undertaken, the window replacements are expected to be much needed, ensuring that the Library continues to provide a pleasant and functional environment for all.

Replace Carpet on the Main Floor

The Library is planning to replace the carpet on the main floor, which spans over 30,000 square feet. Given that commercial carpet is intended to last approximately 15 years, the current carpet will be 20 years old by 2033. Replacing carpet in a library is particularly expensive due to the need to move heavy shelving units, which requires the assistance of a specialized company. As a result, the cost of replacing the carpet can reach up to $40 per square yard. To prepare for this significant expense, the Library will begin saving funds as the project approaches. Additionally, if the carpet is not in dire need of replacement at that time, the Library has the option to postpone the project.
